Cover Songs: My “Worst 5″
I’m restricting this list to the ones that aren’t “so bad they’re good”. That means no Shatner, for example. (I’m saving those for my “weirdest” list.) I’ve also tried to keep it to actual musical artists.
There sure are a lot of bad Beatles covers out there.
- Hey Jude - The Temptations (originally by the Beatles)
Having the song swing between falsetto and basso profundo just doesn’t work.
- Hey Jude - Bing Crosby (originally by the Beatles)
Hey Juuuuuuuuuude, don’t be afraaaaaaid….
- (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction - Devo (originally by the Rolling Stones)
I’m not a big fan of the original, either.
- Day Tripper - Mae West (originally by the Beatles)
I’m sorry, Mae, but you are not cut out to be a singer. Please stop now.
- American Pie - Madonna (originally by Don McLean)
A long, long time ago, I can still remember when cover artists sang the whole song! The good news is that, since Madonna didn’t, we only had to listen to this version for about half as long as the classic original.

Oh, I like the Devo song!
Thanks for reminding me of the abjectness of the Madonna-Don McLean song. I’d repressed it.

Hey, I just wanted to comment on your thoughts on American Pie, I’m not saying it’s the best song ever, cause plainly it’s not ranking high on any of my lists, but Don Mclean himself explained why she didnt sing the whole song, he said exactly “I believe she chose biographical lyrics that reflected her career. On first listen I realized, I had recieved many gifts from God, but this was the first time I recieved on from a Goddess.” I hated the song entirely till I read how he felt, I wont lie I’m a huge Madonna fan, but I feel certain songs shouldn’t be covered, American Pie is an American Classic, but after seeing that the original artist enjoyed it, and felt honored by it, if he can except it and like it, then I think it deserves a second listen

Oh sorry I had one more thing to say if you think the Devo one is bad, I suggest you suffer through the Britney Spears cover of it. You’ll like the devo version much more.
